CESMM3 - Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement
The Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (CESMM3) is becoming increasingly used in civil engineering works, particularly under the NEC form of contract, both in the UK and overseas.
It has a format designed for more effective costing and ease of computerisation, and has features that differ from other forms of measurement. It is therefore important that both engineers and quantity surveyors are familiar with its form and content.
Aims & Objectives:
This course aims to enable delegates to:
- Be able to bill items under CESMM3 and to understand the structure and format of the document
- In particular, to be aware the structure and application of the Method Related Charges, unique to CESMM, and the benefits arising from this facility
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Understand the structure and format of the CESMM3 document
- Be aware of the underlying ethos behind the CESMM3 approach
- Apply the rules of CESMM3 to bill items under a range of the "Classes" of work specified in the document
- Understand and apply the Method Related Charges rules
Course Outline:
- The role of measurement in construction contracts
- The reasons for the development of the CESMM for use with the ICE family of contracts, and its general principles.
- The work classification structure used in CESMM3
- Applying codes, units and descriptors for bill items
- Examples on "Class E" - Earthworks
- Examples on "Classes F to H" - Concrete Works
- Examples on "Classes I, J K & L" -Drainage and Pipe work items
- Review of the application of the "CESMM Rules" and how they reduce ambiguities in the Bill.
- The effect of change and variation on measurement and payment
Mode of Delivery:
- An examination and discussion of key issues, using a PowerPoint presentation
- Illustrated examples of the application to selected classes of CESMM3
- Tutorial exercises
- Discussion and review
Benefits Perceived by Participants:
- Be able to bill items to CESMM3
- Understand the concepts behind this measurement approach
- Understand the basis of the Method Related Charges and be able to apply them
Intended for:
- Graduate Engineers
- Quantity Surveyors
