Eurocode 2 for Bridges - Theory with Design WorkshopsA two-day course on the provisions of the code and explain how to apply them to bridge structures

Eurocode 2 is the new design standard for structural concrete in bridges.

Designed for bridge engineers, this course will provide background to the provisions in the code and explain how to apply them to bridge structures. Practical workshop sessions allow delegates to get to grips with the details and be confident of using Eurocode 2 for real projects.

On completion of this course delegates will understand the principles of Eurocode 2 and be able to apply them to bridge structures

Aims & Objectives:

After this course, delegates will:

  • Have a knowledge of Basis of Structural Design (EC0) and traffic loading (EC1-2)
  • Have an understanding of the content of Eurocode 2 for bridges, including:
    • Materials
    • Durability
    • Structural Analysis
  • Know how to apply Eurocode 2 to:
    • Beams
    • Slabs
    • Piers
    • Foundations
    • Prestressed elements
  • Know how to design for:
    • Flexure
    • Shear
    • Axial loading
    • Torsion
    • Punching shear
    • Strut-and-tie
    • Deflection
    • Fatigue
  • Have an appreciation of precast, plain and lightweight concrete provisions

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to Eurocode 2 and relationship to other Eurocodes and European Standards
  • Basis of design, combinations of actions and traffic loading with design exercise (EC0 and EC1-2)
  • Materials, durability, structural analysis and prestressing with design exercise(s)
  • Ultimate limit state
    • Flexural design with design exercise
    • Shear design with design exercise
    • Punching shear
    • Axial resistance with design exercise
    • Strut-and-tie
    • Fatigue
  • Serviceability limit state
    • Deflection
    • Crack control
  • Foundations
  • Detailing of structural elements with design exercise
  • Overview of precast, plain and lightweight concrete
  • Review of design aids and guidance

The course is an interactive training day and consists of presentations interspersed with practical design exercises.

This course will give delegates confidence to tackle the design of a concrete bridge using Eurocode 2.

Pre-Course Requirements:

Some knowledge of design of concrete bridges is desirable.

A calculator and pencil are essential.

Delegates will benefit strongly from bringing copies of the following documents along to the course:

  • BS EN 1992-1-1 - Eurocode 2: General rules and rules for buildings
  • National annex to BS EN 1992-1-1 - Eurocode 2: General rules and rules for buildings
  • BS EN 1992-2- Eurocode 2: Concrete bridges design and detailing rules
  • National Annex to BS EN 1992-2 - Eurocode 2: Concrete bridges design and detailing rules
