Collision Investigation & Prevention

Overview:

Endorsed by CIHT for CPD

Safety is a fundamental requirement of the road network. Traffic Engineers need to be able to identify areas or routes where collisions are occurring regularly and find out why. They need to be able to examine the accidents records to determine whether there is a pattern which shows when something is wrong with the road layout. They then need to devise potential solutions, evaluate them and design a suitable response.

Aims & Objectives:

The course is designed to enable delegates to:

  • Understand and interpret police road accident data reports
  • Undertake site investigations
  • Identify accident cluster sites where local safety schemes are justified
  • Identify common problems or patterns which explain the cause of accidents
  • Devise and evaluate alternative safety improvement measures
  • Recommend appropriate accident prevention measures

Participants will have learnt how to undertake analysis of road accident records to identify cluster sites with a high accident rate. They will understand how to interpret the data to find out if there are common causes or problems which are contributing to the accidents. From this they will be in a position to devise potential safety scheme measures which address the problem and make the roads safer for the travelling public.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to the police road traffic personal injury accident data recording system
  • Interpreting and understanding accident data
  • How to identify common patterns and trends which lead to accident clusters
  • Site investigations; what to look for
  • The role of Enforcement
  • The role of Education
  • The role of Engineering
  • Devising alternative scheme measures
  • Evaluation of the alternatives
  • Tutor presentation with Visual Aids
  • Individual and Group Exercises
  • Discussion
  • Open Workshop
  • An understanding of the basic principles of Accident Investigation and Prevention
  • The ability to develop new skills and gain experience
  • A good grasp of the fundamental tools and hoe to use them.

Intended For:

  • Traffic Engineers new to Accident Investigation and Prevention who require a basic understanding of the principles so that they can go on to design local safety schemes themselves
  • Managers who want to broaden their understanding of the A.I.P. role carried out by specialists in their team
  • Local authority officers who may be called upon to develop schemes of their own or to evaluate scheme proposals put forward by others in their organisation
  • Private consultants who conduct Transport Assessments or devise Travel Plans
