EC8 is the first single standard for seismic design throughout Europe, and arguably the best state-of-the-art code in the world as it includes latest concepts such as energy dissipation and performance-based design.

EC8, being based on the same philosophy, will be used as part of the suite of Structural Eurocodes for projects outside Europe and potentially in the UK for nuclear-related facilities. This one-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to EC8 covering Conceptual Design, Seismic Analysis and Specific Rules for the Detailed Design and Detailing of Buildings. The course includes practical examples to convey concepts and ensure full understanding of its application.

The tutor who takes this course is a Chartered Engineer Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers with extensive experience in seismic design of structures and concrete framed buildings in the UK (nuclear related facilities) and overseas (earthquake prone countries). They lecture in structural design and conduct and supervise research at a leading UK university. The tutor is the author of the BSI Guide to EC8 for training students, lecturers in the UK and worldwide, and provides the expert commentary of the BSI EC8 online.

Aims & Objectives:

The aim is to deliver a clear and effective introduction to the underlying principles of earthquakes and seismic behaviour, design and analysis. The principles of behaviour are linked to EC8 through worked examples, tutorials and structured discussion. The emphasis is on reinforced concrete building structures although the concepts are widely applicable.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
