GNSS / GPS Awareness (1 day)

This course is designed to ensure delegates understand the theory and practice of GNSS/GPS equipment for site survey and setting out.

Designed for managers, surveyors, engineers and those who are involved in surveying, setting out and establishing survey control, this programme is suitable for those who have survey experience and require an appreciation of current and potential applications of Global Positioning Systems. A discussion of GPS applications to meet the needs of attending delegates will be undertaken.

The course involves a series of presentations by PowerPoint and little practical  work to ensure delegates understand the theory and practice of GNSS/GPS equipment for site survey and setting out. The delegates will improve their understanding of GNSS/GPS equipment and techniques.

Aims & Objectives:

On completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Be aware of the basics of geodesy and coordinate systems
  • Understand the source of errors applying to GPS
  • Be aware of the very wide range of GPS applications
  • Understand the principles and practice of different modes of GPS survey
  • Plan for GPS work
  • Use handheld (3m - 10m accuracy) GPS equipment
  • Use survey-grade GNSS/GPS receivers
