Estimating, An Introduction

Overview:

This is an introductory level course which places the function performed by construction estimators within the overall context of the tender process.

Aims & Objectives:

To provide delegates with an appreciation and understanding of the importance of effective estimating practice and methodology. This will be coupled with an appreciation of the tendering process as a whole from the issuing of tender documents through to the submission of a competitive bid.


Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course delegates will:

  • have a raised awareness and better understanding of the preparation of unit costs and prices and how the net cost of a tender is compiled
  • gain an appreciation of the function of the Board in reviewing and adjudicating upon a tender prior to its submission

1) Tendering

  • The tender process.
  • Relationship of estimating with other disciplines

2) Elements of Cost and Cost calculations for:

  • Labour
  • Plant
  • Materials
  • Sub-Contractors.

3) Pricing of Site Overheads

  • Staff
  • Plant
  • Accommodation
  • Temporary Works
  • Method Related Charges.


4) Sub-Contracts within tenders

  • Enquiry documents
  • Quotations
  • Qualifications
  • Attendances.

5) Compilation of the price and the tender adjudication

  • Reconciling tender resources.
  • The final bid price.

6) Post tender submission - what happens next?


Mode of Delivery:

The training session is run on an interactive basis and incorporates a number of group exercises in addition to elements of PowerPoint presentation.
