Overview:
There are three main Laws associated with information held by organisations which for the non-specialist can be confusing. This workshop explores the main areas covered by each of the Acts and their interrelationship.
Aims & Objectives:
The aim of this one-day workshop is to provide a greater understanding of the Freedom of Information Act, Environmental Information Regulations, and Data Protection Act and how they might apply to your organisation.
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Explain the key elements of the Freedom of Information Act
- Describe a valid Freedom of Information Act request
- Decide what can / cannot be disclosed and how exemptions might apply
- Explain the Public Interest Test
- Explain the key elements of the Environmental Information Regulations
- Define Environmental Information
- Describe a valid Environmental Information Regulations request
- Explain how exemptions might apply
- Explain the key elements of the Data Protection Act
- Describe a valid Data Protection Act Request
- Summarise the guidance provided by the Information Commissioner
- Decide what can / cannot be disclosed
- Describe Best Practice when handling personal data
Course Outline:
During the workshop all 3 areas of legislation will be discussed to identify areas that will be pertinent to those attending.
A highly participative day of short tutor inputs, group sessions and individual work, which provides participants with an opportunity to explore and share best (and worst!) practice in relation to information management.
Participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of the how information
should be handled in their organisations and avoid the pitfalls of mishandling
data.

information in both public and private sector organisations.
