CESMM3 - Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement

The Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (CESMM3) is becoming increasingly used in civil engineering works, under the NEC, ICE and FIDIC forms of contract, both in the UK and overseas.

It has a format designed for more effective costing and ease of computerisation, and has features that differ from other forms of measurement. It is therefore important that both engineers and quantity surveyors are familiar with its form and content.

Aims & Objectives:

This course aims to enable delegates to:

  • Understand the purpose of using a standardised method of measurement
  • Understand the structure and format of the CESMM3 document
  • Be able to prepare bill items and re-measure completed work in accordance with the requirements of CESMM3
  • Be aware of the structure and application of Method Related Charges, unique to CESMM, and the benefits arising from this facility
  • Be aware and appreciate the relationship of the Method of Measurement and the Conditions of Contract

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the structure and format of the CESMM3 document
  • Be aware of the underlying ethos behind the CESMM3 approach
  • Apply the rules of CESMM3 to the measurement of work under a range of the "Classes" of work specified in the document
  • Understand and apply the Method Related Charges rules
  • Understand the importance of the relationship between the method of measurement and the conditions of contract
