Additional Information

How long is the “Year” in Industry?

Under normal circumstances, the placement should last a minimum of 48 weeks; however it can and often does last longer by mutual agreement between student and employer. It is, however, recognised by the university that a flexible approach is sometimes necessary.

Advertising Company Placements

When advertising a placement companies will be required to put together an outline of the placement. This will include a job description, details of the tasks the student undertake, personal qualities and qualifications required, salary, how to apply and any other information deemed relevant. The placement coordinator will email this to all the relevant students.

Application Process

This is down to each company’s preference. Students can send in a CV, with or without a covering letter, or an application form. Applications generally get sent to the placement coordinator and then forwarded directly to the students.

Salary

There is no charge to the employer for Symmons Madge Associates preparation, organisation and management of the placements and the subsequent monitoring and visits - but during the time the student is employed they are paid a salary. The salary can vary but ranges from approximately £14,000 to £20,000 with a current average of £17,000.

Starting Dates

Students can start work any time between the end of the academic year and the end of September. However, a placement is not confirmed until they have attended the health, safety and welfare briefing and successfully completed their second year examinations.

Authority to Start Placement

Students must pass their previous year of study with an average of 50% or above to be allowed to proceed on an authorised university placement; the results are released in June/July. Shortly after the Placement Coordinator will distribute the “Authority to Start Placement” letters. This will be a scanned copy for employers and the original for the students.
