I chose to complete a Year in Industry to gain practical engineering experience before completing my final year studies at Cardiff University. Completing this placement, allowed me to gain technical knowledge of the automotive industry by working alongside industry experts and developing working relationships with various stakeholders within the company.
I have had the privilege of working on a wide variety of tasks which were both beneficial for my personal development and for the industry. The experience gained through the placement year enabled me to see the bigger picture and helped me to perform at a higher level during the final year of my degree. I would highly encourage students to complete the placement year as my overall experience of working with HI-LEX as a student engineer has been thoroughly enjoyable and the experience, skills and knowledge I gained are invaluable and in demand.
I also started the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) during the placement year, where I followed the structured developed framework and completed quarterly reports and annual assessment. Upon graduation, I was awarded the IMechE MPDS student of the year award.
Symmons Madge Associates supported me during the placement year by giving me constant guidance, motivation and reassurance.
