Piling Engineering - An Introduction

This course will bring you up to date with recent construction and plant developments, as well as the most important aspects of the Eurocodes. It will also focus on practical issues and piling problems, and in particular, how these problems can be overcome.

The course offers a wide-ranging practical guide to the piling market in the UK. The presenter has over 45 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer, with some time working for a major piling contractor.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand various piling and related ground engineering techniques
  • Define individual responsibilities when managing piling contracts
  • Decide how to select the most suitable types of pile for particular situations
  • Understand the key health and safety and quality issues
  • Appreciate many of the important technical issues in piling
  • Understand basic design principles

Course Outline:

  • Introduction - definition of piling, including retaining walls and sheet piling
  • General overview of what types of piling should be used where and why
  • Detailed presentations and discussions on:


o Micropiles (low headroom)
o Bored piles
o Driven piles
o Sheet pile walls
o Pile retaining walls (secant & contiguous)
o Ground anchors and passive ties

 

  • Contractual Issues, including site investigation and ground risk
  • Main contractor attendances, including platform design and maintenance
  • Simple pile design and specifications
  • Pile testing and analysis
  • Pile trimming and handover to the next trades
  • Health and safety and Quality Issues
  • Case histories and piling problems

  • Final Assessment (multiple choice questions)

Engineering staff employed by Clients, Consulting Engineers or Contractors involved with the procurement and management of piling works.

Pre-Course Requirements:

  • Complete a pre-course questionnaire (submit 1 week prior to course)
  • Bring a calculator and scale rule
  • Think about any piling issues or problems which you may have had in the past so that they can be discussed during the day
